Anything For You
As he hung up the phone, his heart sank. He had just gone in for
his yearly physical, and found horrible news. The black cancer that had
plagued him in
Tunguska was resurfacing.
The doctors complained he should come in for more tests, but he refused
until he talked with
Dana first. He got up, threw his coat on, and left his apartment. He was
looking at his shoes walking down the hallway, and wasn't aware that
Skinner was walking toward him.
"Mulder." He said in a tone just loud enough to wake him out of
his reverie. Mulder looked up, and was surprised to see his superior
standing before him. "I have very important news for you and Scully.
We can't talk in your apartment, they can hear us. Lets go to a bar, and
I'll tell you what I can there."
"What about Dana?"
"I'm afraid she can't hear this, until you have made up your mind."
Mulder looked at him questioningly, but simply followed when Skinner
turned and started walking down the corridor.
The bar was somewhat crowded, and they sat in a booth in the
back. "What is this all about?" Mulder wanted to know.
"Listen to me, Fox. Cancer Man has a way to cure Scully."
"How?! I'll do anything."
"Just listen. There is a reason that your cancer is
*resurfacing* just now. The cancer that Agent Scully has can be cured,
and *your* cancer was created because of hers."
"I don't understand."
Skinner glanced around the room to see if anyone was listening.
No one was, so he continued. " Let me put it to you straight, Mulder.
Your cancer, if removed, can be used to cure
Agent Scully."
Mulder's mouth dropped open. "Anything, I'll do anything for her."
"Mulder, this is a big decision. While I respect your loyalty, and
dedication to Scully, I also respect you. There are big risks Mulder, and
no guarantees. I suggust you think about that."
"I appreciate your concern, but I think you know how I feel about
Scully, and that there is nothing I wouldn't do for her."
Skinner bowed his head, and nodded.
Mulder put a hand on Skinner's arm. "Thank you for telling me."
He looked up. "Where is he? Where can I find Cancer Man?"
"You can't. He has to find you. I'm sorry, but that's the way it is.
I can't change that, and neither can you. All you can do is wait."
Mulder nodded with a grim look on his face. "I have to go tell
Scully." He got up to leave, and Skinner stopped him.
"Mulder." He turned around to face Skinner. "Good luck." Mulder
nodded, and turned to leave.
It seemed to take forever to get to her apartment. Once there, he
knocked on the door with urgency. The door opened to reveal a tired,
and half awake Scully. "Can I come in?" She moved out of his way, he
walked past her, and sat on her sofa.
Dana rubbed her eyes, brushed the hair on the right side of her
face behind her ear, and went to go sit by him. "What's up?"
He took her hands in his, and looked into her eyes. "Look Dana,
Skinner told me tonight that there is a way to cure your cancer."
"How?" She said in surprise.
"I got the results from my physical today, and it shows that the
black cancer I got in
Tunguska is back. Skinner told me that if the black cancer were to be
removed, it would cure your cancer."
"What are the risks of this?"
He looked down at their hands.
"I won't let you do it, Mulder."
"Dana, please."
"No. I won't let you put yourself at risk for me."
"I do it all the time." He said just above a whisper.
She looked at him. "Mulder, you mean too much to me. If I
survived and lost you, it wouldn't be surviving. I'd die without you. I
couldn't go on knowing that you died to save me."
"But what if it would save the both of us? The doctors say that
I could die anyway from this black cancer. If it was removed, the
procedure could save both of us. No one's sure that it will kill me, it's our
only shot."
She looked into his eyes with tears surfacing in hers. She let
herself fall forward into his arms, and held him tight. He held her with the
same intensity, one hand on her back, and one supporting her head. She
was crying, and though it didn't show as much, so was he. She was
sobbing, but tears simply streamed down his cheeks. "We can do it
together, Scully. We can do it." She nodded into his neck.
Dana gently backed away, and wiped the tears from his face,
while he wiped away hers.
His hands fell away, but one of hers remained on his cheek. She
massaged it soothingly, and said, "Fox, if I never get the chance to tell
you again," She paused to take a breath, then whispered, "I love you."
He placed a hand over the one she rested on his cheek, and took
it away to kiss her palm. "I love you too." He whispered. They
embraced again, and very quietly, soon fell asleep, her head resting on
his chest.
The next morning when she woke, she smiled seeing Mulder
peacefully sleeping beneath her. She would have gotten up to let him
sleep, but his arms were like steel bars, holding her to him. For a while,
she just stayed there, savoring the sensation of him holding her.
She hugged him, and his grip tightened on her. A couple seconds later,
his eyes blinked open, and he smiled seeing her beautiful face grinning at
him.
"I've gone to heaven." He said just above a whisper.
"So have I." She gently replied.
They sat up, and she leaned back into his arms. "So what do we
do know?"
"Skinner said all we can do is wait."
"Fox, I want you to stay here with me."
"Sure. I'll just go back to my place and pick up a few things. I'll be
back in twenty minutes, I promise." She closed her eyes and nodded.
As he headed for his car, he thought about what this would
mean. They had just confessed their deepest secrets, and were about
to go through an experience that if lived through, would bring them closer
than they had ever been, and it would stay like that. Lost in his thoughts,
he never heard the footsteps, and winced as he took a blow to the head.
She sat there, picturing his arms still around her. If they got
through this, it would change so many things. Things that needed to be
changed. Holding her knees to her chest, and resting her head in her
arms that were folded atop her knees, she closed her eyes, and never
heard the door open. Before she knew anyone was in the room, she felt
a sharp pain in her arm, and looked at it to find a tranquilizing dart. She
couldn't even open her mouth before the darkness swallowed her.
When her eyes blinked open, she tried to move, but couldn't. Her
wrists were held down with restraints, as were her ankles. She could
see Mulder out of the corner of her eye.
There were people standing around him in plastic suits. He was
unconcious, she could see, and that stopped her fears of him being in
pain. She could barely make out these people saying, "Ok, we got them.
Now transfer them to her." This person pointed at her, and she
automatically closed her eyes.
The next thing she knew, there was a mask over her face,
covering her mouth. They were putting her into deep sleep, for which
she was thankful.
Mulder opened his eyes, and tried to move. No use. He
recognized the position he was in from past experiences. Ankles and
wrists bound tight, he desperately looked around for
Scully. In a quick glance, there she was. There were people standing
around her, placing the black cancer in her eyes. He could see the once
shining blue cloud over with splotches of grey and black. He closed his
eyes tight, praying she wasn't in pain. In the backround, he heard them
say something like, "It's gone, take them out now." He opened his eyes in
time to see black slug-like creatures emerge out of her eyes. The people
contained these beings in air tight containers, and once all of the
creatures had come out of her, the people stored them in a vault.
The strength to keep conciousness was too great. Just before
he passed out, he could see thick grey smoke clouding in one corner on
the room. He caught a glimpse of the devil, and then his eyes closed
heavily.
His head was throbbing when he came to. Carefully, he eased
himself to his feet, and kept his balance against his car. There was the
patter of rain, and he realized he was back in
Scully's parking garage. Without thinking, he raced up to her floor, and
turned the knob. He was surprised as it slid open, but thankful
nonetheless when he saw her sleeping peacefully on her couch. He
carefully made his way over to her, and squatted before her. Gently,
Fox placed a hand on her cheek, and she awoke with a start.
She exhaled, seeing him before her, and almost threw her arms
around his neck. He smiled, ravishing in the strawberry scent of her
hair, and closing his arms around her too. "It's all over, Scully. We're
okay."
She was smiling brilliantly, and crying happy tears. "They didn't
hurt you, did they?"
"No, I was unconcious for the whole thing."
"Good, me too." They broke out of their hug, and drowned in
each other's eyes. "I never want to be without you, Fox. Never."
He kissed her sweetly, just longing for a sign that this was really
happening. That they were really safe. Then, he remembered where he
was. The safest place in the world. In Dana's arms. And he wanted to
stay here. Always. "Oh Dana." He whispered.
"The moment I'm not with you is the moment my heart stops beating, for
my heart and soul belong to you. I would do anything for you."
The End :*)
