This was previously known as VERSE TWO...but I got such a huge response to
continue the story that it turned into something longer than I originally
intended. There's lots of new stuff here, so skim down to whatever it is you
last remember reading, and ENJOY! There is one last part that will end it for
good - so don't be angry with me for the way I left off at the end.

Summary: Scully realizes the direction her relationship with Mulder is taking
and decides to pull out a map so they can get there faster :)

The rain hit the windows of Scully's apartment with an abrupt staccato
that was somehow soothing to her tired mind. She sat curled like a cat on the
couch, reading her very own copy of THE GREAT MUTATO.
This was the rewrite...the one Mulder called for. His insistance upon
changing the ending to a happy one had bothered Scully more than she cared to
admit. It raised serious questions about their lives...her life. Were things
so gloomy, so glum, that Mulder was experiencing a need for fairy tale
endings? Hadn't they just experienced a fairy tale of sorts with the remission
of the cancer within her? It didn't take long for Scully to answer her own
question. No. They learned of manipulations and truths that were abhorent.
Mulder was denied a happy ending with Samantha. Scully would live forever
with the fear of men in shadows dictating the end of her remission. No, not a
happy ending.
Scully's thoughts trailed back to their last case. Once again lost in a
forest with only Mulder to rely upon, Scully allowed the walls to crumble just
a bit more than usual. She'd held him while he slept. Oh, in her rational
mind, Scully had justified it in medical terms. Mulder needed the warmth to
survive, and she could provide it just as any self-respecting doctor of
medicine would have done.
But, shortly after Mulder fell asleep, Scully's fingers did a little
walking...to his unruly locks of hair, to his furrowed brow, to his soft cheek
scattered with stubble. There was no justifying her need to feel him beneath
her fingertips. Scully wanted to touch Mulder, to feel *him*, to hold *him*.
Not as a doctor, but as a woman - a woman in love with a man. That man.
Mulder.
She turned to the last page of the comic after shaking the unrequited
thoughts from her head for the moment. She had to admit, this new ending was
so *Mulder*. Unconditional love for mutant babies and the man who fathered
them. A rock concert with a sex symbol-singer center stage. A romantic dance
between FBI Special Agen....A ROMANTIC DANCE???
Scully stared at the drawing for a long while, tracing the likeness of
Mulder and herself embracing on the dance floor. They were smiling wide,
*happy* smiles, and holding each other. Mutants, sex symbols - all up
Mulder's alley, but Scully was honestly flabbergasted by the warm, fuzzy
ending for the FBI Agents. Perhaps Izzy added this detail on his own - even
other agents trained to detect nuances in relationships often mislabled the
relationship between Mulder and Scully. Or had they read into something
neither she nor Mulder were willing to face? She had to know.
Reaching over to the coffee table, Scully picked up the cordless phone
and dialed Mulder.
"Mulder."
"Hey. Busy?"
"Nah, just watchin' the Knicks. Everything ok?"
"Does something have to be wrong for me to call you?"
"Nope. Whacha doin'?"
"Catching up on some reading actually."
"Pathology Today or a case file?"
"THE GREAT MUTATO."
"Oh. The copy *I* gave you, or the original...from Izzy's room?"
"The copy you gave me, Mulder."
"The kid's pretty good, don'tcha think?"
"He's very good, but not quite as entertaining as you are. I have to say that
I enjoyed the alternate ending much more than the original."
"Oh? How so?"
"Well, we've seen so many maladies in our line of work...it's a shame that
genetically defected people aren't embraced by society. And Cher...I've
always been a fan, you know. I remember watching THE SONNY AND CHER
COMEDY
HOUR with Bill, Melissa, and Charlie."
"I Got You Babe."
"Apparently...from the looks of this final frame."
"Yeah, well, I...uh...I just thought that it was funny at the time."
"Funny? That we'd end up dancing? I love to dance, Mulder."
"You do? I didn't...not *funny* funny, just, you know, fairy tale-esque. The
guy gets the girl. Forget it. I'm sorry if it bothered you."
"I sang to you all night in the forest, Mulder."
"What?"
"Last week. When you told me to sing so you'd know I was awake. You fell right
to sleep, but I sang all night. Did you know that?"
"No. I...uh...I had no idea you did that. You were so hesitant at first, I
figured as soon as I fell asleep you stopped."
"You missed my big finale, you know."
"I wasn't aware you had one, Scully."
"Wanna hear it now?"
"Serious? Yes, I would."
"If I were the King of the world/ Tell you what I'd do/ I'd throw away the
cars and the bars and the wars/ And make sweet love to you
With a satisfied grin, Scully placed the phone back on the coffee table
and bounded off the couch. Pausing for a moment at the rack of CD's, Scully
made a selection. Hitting the power button on the stereo, the first sounds of
electric guitar on the Cher CD drowned out the pounding rain.
*****************************************
The physical reaction was immediate...sweaty palms, increased heart rate,
shortness of breath, cotton mouth, and an erection to rival that of his former
teenage self. Mulder was speechless, and eternally greatful to Scully for
hanging up on him. What to do? What to do?
Replaying the conversation over and over in his eidetic memory, picturing
himself and Scully in a variety of situations, Mulder wasn't sure what he was
supposed to do, or even if he should do anything.
*****************************************
Scully danced around her couch with the smuggest little grin planted on
her face. Until the panic set in.
"That could have been the stupidest thing you've ever done, or the wisest,
Dana," she spoke aloud, then in a half-giggle, "What was I thinking?"
As she headed toward the kitchen to put the tea kettle on, Scully decided
it was a smart move on her part. She had made up her mind in her hospital room
the morning that Mulder stopped in for her reassurance that he was making the
right choice by not implicating Skinner. Time had run out for them - Mulder
and Scully - to keep running, hiding from every emotion. Scully knew it was
time to face Mulder with all her heart and soul and open them to him - win or
lose. Somehow, Scully knew this was a winning situation.
*****************************************
Mulder had to see her. Hearing her voice wasn't going to satisfy him. He
had to look into her eyes and hear the words. Mulder ambled around his
apartment looking for his left sneaker. Pausing, he caught his reflection in
the mirror. Paint-stained sweatpants, a stretched and faded NY Knicks t-shirt,
and one sneaker. Twisting his head around, searching frantically, Mulder
spotted the medium blue jeans that Scully admired on him last week. Perhaps he
should go with the Doc Martins...Scully loved his Doc Martins, especially with
these jeans...and the black sweater. Mulder kicked off one Fila hightop, and
discarded the t-shirt. Dropping it on the floor in the hall, Mulder dug
through the drawer and retrieved his black sweater. With a smile, he pulled it
over his head and located his shoes across the room.
Stopping at the mirror, Mulder was pleased with the overall effect. He
knew Scully would be pleased. What he would do with a pleased Scully was still
a mystery at this point, but he knew he wanted to elicit *some* reaction from
her...something remotely like the reaction she had on him with her little
song.
Grabbing his leather jacket from the coat rack, Mulder ran his fingers
through his unruly hair, and slammed the door behind him.
***************************************
Scully wanted to hear his voice. She fully expected to hear from Mulder
by now and his silence was unnerving. She did, after all, hang up on him. She
should call back. She'd do just that...call him back and tell him...What? What
would she tell Mulder once she had him on the phone? That it was all a joke?
Nope. Couldn't do that because then she'd be a liar. Maybe she could act as
though nothing at all was ever said. No good. Then she'd just be playing the
same stupid games she'd played with Mulder for the last five years. *Why not
just come clean?* The voice in her head was really starting to bug her, and if
she wasn't such a skeptic, Scully would swear Melissa was speaking to her.
Frought wth indecision, Scully jumped when she heard a knock on the door.
Mulder. She knew without even looking. Pulling a deep cleansing breath through
her lungs and releasing slowly, Scully opened the door.
Wow. Oh, God, wow! If ever Scully needed strength and power of will, it
was now. Mulder looked...beautiful. His head was tilted slightly and he was
watching her with a slightly bashful, uneasy stare. His hands were shoved into
the front pockets of his jeans and a few errant locks of hair hung over his
brow.
"Hi, Scully."
She smiled a nervous little smile and stepped back to let him in.
"I'm glad you're still here...I...didn't call."
"No, you didn't." The double meaning of her words not escaping either of them.
Scully was nervously licking her lips, for suddenly her mouth was full of
cotton. Mulder had to look away. The sight of her pink tongue caressing the
lips he so wanted to caress himself was not helping the tense situation they
found themselves in.
Mulder moved into the living room, removing his jacket and tossing it
onto a chair. Hesitantly, he sat on the couch.
"Can I get you anything? Coffee, water, a sandwich?"
"Water...cold...cold water would be great, Scully."
She filled two glasses with water and ice cubes and took a seat next to
Mulder on the couch. Handing him his glass, he closed his hand around hers
leaving both agents with a tingling feeling. Scully giggled nervously.
"What?"
"Nothing, Mulder."
"C'mon, why are you laughing?"
"I'm not laughing," she said breaking into a fit of laughter.
Mulder was at a loss, but her laughter was infectious. He began to
chuckle leading the way to an open belly laugh. They sat there for about 10
minutes trying to regain composure, but failing miserably. By the time they
had calmed down, Scully was curled in a ball on her side with her head in
Mulder's lap as a result of falling over sideways from hysteria.
Scully's breathing had slowed considerably and she realized Mulder's hand
rested on her head, gently stroking in smallish circles with the tips of his
fingers.
"You okay, Mulder?"
"I'm okay, now. What *was* that," he said with a swallowed chuckle.
"Tension-release," Scully offered with a shrug.
Mulder nodded in agreement as she twisted a bit to look at him. Mulder's
hand moved from her head down to her shoulder, and he resumed the easy
stroking he'd been engaged in moments before. He moved his hand a little
further down her arm each time eventually reaching her hand that was resting
on the curve of her hip. Lacing his fingers with hers, Mulder studied their
hands as if his life depended on it.
"Soft."
He couldn't speak, but looked at Scully with his brow furrowed, afraid
that the sound of his voice would break the spell.
"Your hand. It's very soft...and warm."
They both considered their entwined fingers a few moments longer before
Mulder spoke.
"Neither of us will be crowned King of the World any time soon, ya know."
Now it was Scully's turn to flash a questioning look at her partner.
"The song. 'If I were the king of the world, I'd tell you what I'd do...'"
"Oh."
Mulder began stroking Scully's wrist with his thumb as they both pondered
the rest of the verse.
"I think you're wrong, Mulder."
Scully sat up without losing her grasp on Mulder's hand. She snuggled
into the circle of his arm, resting her head on his shoulder.
"*This* theory I'm dying to hear."
"Perhaps I'm not ready to share it, Mulder. Perhaps you're not quite ready to
hear it."
The two sat in silence for a while longer, until the CD player clicked
and whirred with the changing of the CDs inside. Mulder pondered Scully's
words.
"I am ready to hear it, Scully. I'm here, aren't I?"
"Oh, Mulder," she said with a sigh, "There's so much at stake. I won't lower
my standards. I won't tolerate the same things in a personal relationship that
I find myself tolerating in the professional arena."
"I'm here, Scully. I don't know if that makes a difference, but I'm here..."
Mulder realized the depth of the words he had just spoken, and remembered
the last time he had said them to Scully. She had just been returned to him,
comatose, and her sister had urged him to tell Scully his feelings before it
was too late. Scully sensed a change in Mulder - she saw the change in his
eyes, from a brownish hazel to a deep mossy color.
The soft sounds of Andrea Bocelli filled the room as the stereo began the
next selection.
"Italian, Scully? I didn't realize you were a fan."
"My mother loves it. She gave me a copy for Christmas...to relax me."
Scully rested her head on Mulder's shoulder once again and closed her
eyes. A small smile flitted across her lips.
"Dance with me, Scully. Give me that happy ending."
He stood, pulling her to her feet and into his arms. Like a ragdoll,
Scully followed his lead, awed at the passion in his eyes. She wanted to
believe in this, in him. As the tenor's words filled the room, Mulder pulled
Scully closer to him, tightening his embrace. Mulder's lips brushed her ear
sending waves of arousal through Scully's body. She shivered. He smiled.
"When I'm alone, I dream and words fail...There is no light if you are not
with me..."
Scully pulled her head back to look into Mulder's eyes. The questions in
her own made him laugh softly.
"The song, Scully, it's beautiful. Do you understand the lyrics."
"No, M-Mulder, I-I don't. You speak Italian."
It was a statement of fact. Of course Mulder would speak Italian. It's
just like him to speak a romantic foreign language and never let that slip in
all the years of their partnership. He locked his eyes with hers and nodded in
confirmation.
"Since high school. One of my many hidden talents," his said with a lop-sided
grin.
Mulder spoke a rough translation of the words that enveloped them, his
gaze never waivering.
"I'll go with you to countries I never saw and shared with you...I'll go
across the seas...with you, I'll experience them. When you are far away, I
dream and words fail, but I know you are with me...my moon, my sun...you ae
here with me."
Breathing was a becoming more and more difficult. Scully felt as though
she would drown in this sea of sensation: the sound of Mulder's voice, raspy
and deep; his eyes that seared her very core; the feel of his body pressed to
hers - aroused yet not insisent; the clean scent that was his alone.
"Con te partiro. Io con te...I'll go with you, I - with you, " Mulder
whispered.
Neither noticed that one song faded into another. Mulder's lips brushed
Scully's, and time stood still as they savored the feel of each other, so
intimate, for the first time.
Scully was the first to pull out of the kiss. Intoxicated was the only
way to describe how she felt. She was drunk on Mulder. Never once in her life
did Scully feel this way, and she dreaded the moment when the feeling would
fade.
Mulder, staring deeply into Scully's eyes, did not miss the fleeting look
of regret cross her face. She pressed her forehead to Mulder's chest and took
a deep, cleansing breath to clear her head.
"What is it, Scully?"
"It's nothing. Really."
Smoothing his hands over her back, Mulder gripped her arms and gently
pushed Scully back far enough to see her face.
"Hey."
"Hey," she replied.
"I'm afraid, too."
A faint smile played across Scully's lips. Sometimes, he knew her heart
and her mind so well - as well as she felt she knew his. Falling down onto
the couch, Scully tucked her legs underneath her. Mulder followed.
"You terrify me, Scully. You always have, even if I am the spooky one," he
said with a grin.
"Why am I so afraid? I've wanted this for so long."
"How long?"
"Long, Mulder."
"Like two years? Three? A few months? What's *long*?"
"You never took advantage of me, Mulder. Never. It made me so angry
sometimes...when I thought I really wanted you to push the boundaries. You
never allowed me to relinquish control. When I came to you on that first case,
scared out of my mind about those mosquito bites...I felt your breath on my
skin, and the barest hint of your fingers on my back. I threw myself into your
arms, but you didn't push. You let me stay with you. Then, you told me all
about your sister. I realized something after that night, Mulder...when I got
to know you a little better."
"Uh-oh. Big revelation here..."
Scully laughed at his insecurity. He always had a stupid comment or an
off-color joke to lessen the tension he felt. So predictable, Mulder, she
thought.
"Asking me to stay and telling me about Samantha was more intimate for you
than making love to me, wasn't it? You *did* make love to me that night,
Mulder. You gave me your most sacred gift. I have always known that. When
people assume we're lovers, I smile to myself because, in a sense, we
are...and I sound like a total ass, don't I?"
"Is that a rhetorical question?"
"Only if you were planning to answer 'yes'."
His smile warmed her. She smiled, too, leaning back and resting her head
on the back of the couch. Throwing her arm across her eyes, Scully let out a
deep sigh.
"Well, what do we do now, Mulder?"
"Why don't you tell me how I can be become the King of the World?"
His voice was a whisper, tender and hesitant. God, Scully loved him. He
was so unreal sometimes -- an apparition, a mirage of salvation for her
tired and lonely soul. It seemed too often that as soon as Scully allowed
herself to feel him, feel his presence in her life for all it meant to her, he
would disappear.
Mulder had a habit of ditching her both physically and emotionally. The
physical ditching Scully could handle - there was something tangible to argue.
It was the emotional bail that shook Scully to her core. It made her doubt her
own feelings, her sense of security, her trust in her own ability to assess a
situation. She would be left to wonder if Mulder had revealed a part of
himself to her, or if she was seeing things that simply were not there.
"I can't tell you that."
"But you know the answer."
"I know *my* answer, but I honestly cannot answer for you. I couldn't put
that on you, make you have to live up to some ideal that isn't reality."
"Do you learn this stuff in Girl School, Scully? How to Baffle a Man 101?"
"Yeah, the nuns had all the answers. They would separate the boys and the
girls in junior high school under the guise of Hygene Lessons and fill our
heads with trickery and deception so as to avoid our impregnation. We also
learned how to replace a roll of toilet paper and when not to wear white
shoes."
Mulder grabbed a throw pillow and dropped it on Scully's folded legs. He
turned and leaned back, resting his head on the pillow and closing his eyes.
Her arm moved away from her face and she looked down at the man in her lap.
Her hand instinctively went to his hair. As her fingers began a gentle massage
of his scalp, Mulder shivered slightly. He fidgeted and adjusted his position
and his jeans at the same time.
Scully was enthralled by the affect her hand had on him. A long, slow
sigh escaped his mouth and his breathing became a little deeper. Her gaze
wandered along the lines of his body. He was lanky, thin, muscular...and
aroused. Modestly, he made every attempt to hide this from her without calling
attention to himself, but the more he adjusted his position in tiny
incriments, the more settled Scully's eyes became on his pelvis.
Her left hand continued working his scalp while her right hand began a
journey of its own. Pressed flat against his chest, Scully's hand made small
circles on his upper torso. Each circle beginning and ending with a brush of
her thumb across the hollow at the base of his throat. A low, almost inaudible
growl vibrated against the pad of her thumb each time sending waves of desire
to her very center.
There was no hiding his erection now. It pushed against the soft denim,
and he was silently thankful the jeans were loose fitting. Scully slipped her
hand into the V-neck of his sweater and explored the feel of his chest-hair on
her fingertips. This caused Mulder's hips to slightly buck and a sharp puff of
breath passed his lips. Her exploration found a taut, tiny nipple. Again using
only the tips of her fingers, Scully moved her hand up and down over it.
Mulder reached up and took her hand from his hair. He laced his fingers
with hers and caressed her palm with his thumb. She watched his face; his eyes
remaining closed. He pulled her hand to his mouth and brushed his lips across
the knuckles. Then, again moistening his lips, Mulder pulled one finger into
his mouth and began a slow waltz with his tongue around her fingertip.
Scully pinched his hardened nipple in response, eliciting a deep chuckle
from Mulder.
"Touche, Dr. Scully."
"I wasn't aware we were trying to out-manuver one another. Are we engaged in
battle?"
"Make love, not war, Scully."
"Shall I crown you, my dark Knight, and make you King?"
"It's a big responsibility...being King. Are you sure you want to bestow that
honor on me?"
"Do you think you're ready for the kingdom?"
"It's a lot of power to give one man..."
"*I* believe in you. Do you have faith in yourself?"
"More than I've ever had before, but I have one request."
"What is it?"
"I need your help. I've thought about being King for so long, and imagined so
many ways that I would...um, rule...I'm afraid that I may have all the plans
mixed up in my head. You know, trying to reign over too much territory at once
without ever really gaining the appreciation and support of the kingdom."
"Don't think. That's the key to gaining entry to the castle. All barriers to
the fortress have been successfully removed. The King's arrival is greatly
awaited."
Scully lowered her lips to his and slowly kissed Mulder, passion building
with each gentle caress. Scully pulled back to catch her breath and nudged her
way out from underneath him. Without looking back, she disappeared into her
bedroom. Mulder wasn't sure if he should follow like a dutiful soldier, or
wait for his loyal subject to return. He opted for plan number one, and
bounded off the couch toward her room.
As Mulder stepped inside, the light scent of cinnamon candles on the
dresser tickled his nose. Scully blew out the match and reached for him.
Mulder moved swiftly to her side. She turned away and looked into the mirror
over the dresser. Mulder stood behind her, catching her eyes in the
reflection. The dancing, flickering flames softened their image.
Mulder rested his hands on her shoulders, rubbing the back of her neck
with his thumbs. His hands slid down her arms and took hold of her tiny hands.
Raising her arms, he placed her hands around his own neck and moved his hands
down the underside of her arms. He carefully measured the weight and roundness
of her breasts in his hands as he continued his downward journey. Grasping the
bottom of her shirt, Mulder pulled it off in one swift jerk and tossed it
aside. Her nipples were hard and tight, and her skin luminous in the soft
light.
"Perfect."
"Mulder..."
"Shhhh...Let me make sweet love to you," he cooed in her ear. "Let me make you
cry out for more, Scully. Let me make you come."
Turning her to face him, Mulder took her mouth in a hungry kiss. He
lifted Scully to sit on the dresser and pressed his arousal against her
possessively.
"Please, Mulder. Please..."
He moved them to the bed and fell backward, pulling Scully down on top of
him. His hands stroked her flesh seeking as much access to her softness as he
could. Rolling her onto her back, Mulder worked his way down Scully's body -
tasting and touching and smelling her. He hooked his fingers into the
waistband of her leggings and pulled them off, taking her panties with them.
Touching his tongue to her ankle, Mulder kissed his way up her legs, stopping
to pay special attention to the spot behind her knee. His journey slowed
considerably as he made his way up her inner thigh. Her scent was heavy and
thick and Mulder knew nothing but the desire to taste her.
He parted her legs further with his hands and just gazed at her pink, wet
center. His head rested on her thigh as he parted her more fully with his
fingers. Her auburn curls were slick and glistening from her arousal. Mulder
ran one finger from her anus to her pouting clit causing Scully to moan and
writhe.
"Mulder, please..."
With all the tenderness in his power, Mulder kissed her center. Gentle,
almost chaste, kisses to her very core. Hesitantly, Mulder's tongue dipped
into her and extracted some of her musky juices. He was reeling from the
sensations. Again and again, Mulder slowly, delicately kissed and licked and
nibbled at her until he could feel her muscles begin to tense. Her cries were
more despirate now.
"Please...please, Mulder, now. God, now..."
He slipped a finger inside her and then another, feeling the pulsing of
her silky walls around him. Kissing her hip and her naval, Mulder moved up her
torso keeping an even rhythm with his fingers. He attached his mouth to a
rosy nipple alternating between suckling and biting. His fingers moved faster
and harder within her until he was laying next to her.
"Scully, look at me. Look at me."
His words were demanding, but safe, and Scully complied. His
ministrations slowed a little, calming her, coaxing her down from the edge of
the precipice of ecstacy. She wimpered.
"I want to be inside of you. I want to come with you. Can you do that for me,
Scully? Can you hold on?"
"Yes...yesss..."
He rolled away from her and she shivered at the loss of his heat. She
watched hungrily as he removed his clothes. His erection bobbed in front of
him, big and red and glistening at the tip.
Kneeling between her legs, Mulder positioned himself at her opening
pushing in just past the head of his cock. As his eyes slid closed, Scully
pushed at his chest.
"Open them, Mulder. Open your eyes."
They were locked in a passionate, erotic world meant only for these two
lovers - here and now. Mulder burried himself in her wet heat, and ground his
hips against her. Scully's cries were frenzied as Mulder held a rhythm of
hard, deep thrusts until she came, and he followed quickly after.
Mulder kissed her...slowly and deeply. A kiss that seemed to last for
hours. When he finally ended the kiss, his arms were wrapped tightly around
her and she tucked her head into the bend of his neck and shoulder. Mulder
rubbed his cheek against the gossamer strands of hair on the top of her head.
Then, his hands began to tremble. Scully could feel the sensation like an
electric vibrator, or a washing machine on the spin cycle. He was shaking.
Scully looked up at him and saw his eyes tightly closed and a trail of wetness
left by a tear or two.
"Hey, you ok?"
He nodded.
"Mulder, you're trembling. Let me get the comforter from the floor."
As she moved to leave his arms, he loosened his hold on her. His eyes
opened and he followed her naked form to the foot of the bed. She lifted the
comforter, and covered him with it. He held up one corner enough for Scully to
climb in next to him. turned her back to his chest and snuggled in beside him,
feeling his arms wrap around her again. Mulder's breath was warm on her ear
and face and it sent an arousing chill through her.
"Scully," he breathed, "We need to talk."
THE END...for now.
